About Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell (1847–1922) was a Scottish-born Canadian inventor, scientist, and engineer best known for inventing and patenting the first practical telephone in 1876. Inspired by his family’s work in speech and elocution—and influenced by his deaf mother and wife—Bell devoted much of his life to research on hearing and communication.

Beyond the telephone, he pioneered work in optical telecommunications, aeronautics, and hydrofoil technology, and he co-founded the American Telephone and Telegraph Company (AT&T) in 1885. Bell also served as the second president of the National Geographic Society, helping shape its influential publication.
