Description

This official 1996 Proof $2 Coin and Bank Note Set was issued by the Royal Canadian Mint to commemorate the historic transition from Canada’s $2 paper banknote to the new bi-metallic $2 coin (the “Toonie”), first released in 1996.

This premium presentation set pairs one of Canada’s earliest proof $2 coins with a rare BRX-prefix $2 replacement banknote from the Birds of Canada series. Replacement notes were produced in very limited quantities to substitute damaged or imperfect notes during printing, making them significantly scarcer than standard circulation notes.

Both pieces are preserved in excellent condition:

  • The proof $2 coin is housed in a clear protective capsule

  • The BRX replacement note is secured in an acrylic holder

  • The set is presented in its original Royal Canadian Mint blue presentation case with Certificate of Authenticity

With a strictly limited mintage of 27,103 sets, this issue is highly sought after by collectors of Canadian coins, paper money, and transition-era numismatics.

About BRX Replacement Notes

During banknote production, any sheets damaged or rejected during quality control were replaced with specially designated notes. In the Birds of Canada series, these replacement notes are identified by an “X” as the third character in the serial prefix. Because far fewer replacement notes were printed, they command a strong collector premium and are rarely encountered in presentation sets.
