Description
A coin in the pocket. A bill in the hand. A turning point in Canadian history.
From Bill to Toonie commemorates the moment Canada retired its $2 bank note and welcomed the now-iconic Toonie into everyday life. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2021, this special set marks the 25th anniversary of Canada’s $2 circulation coin with a remarkable pairing of past and present.
At the heart of the set is a 99.99% pure silver recreation of the original 1996 $2 coin, struck in a larger 38 mm format and bearing the commemorative double date “1996–2021.” Selective gold plating on the center and rim mirrors the look of the familiar bi-metallic Toonie. Beside it rests a true piece of monetary history: an uncirculated $2 bank note from the 1986 Birds of Canada series, sealed in its own capsule.
What makes this set especially distinctive is the bank note itself. Identified by its “BRX” serial prefix, it is a replacement note produced to substitute damaged notes during printing. Replacement notes rarely entered circulation, and this example has been preserved in the Mint’s vault for 25 years, making it a standout collectible.
Struck in fine silver and limited to 7,500 sets worldwide, this release is both a nostalgic tribute and a cornerstone piece for collectors of Canadian currency. As a pure silver issue, it is GST/HST exempt.

Design
The silver coin faithfully reproduces the obverse and reverse designs of the first $2 circulation coin issued in 1996, enhanced with selective gold plating on both the center and rim. The larger diameter allows for greater detail while preserving the familiar Toonie appearance.
The accompanying $2 bank note comes from the 1986 Birds of Canada series, representing the final generation of $2 bills issued before their withdrawal in 1996. The note’s BRX prefix confirms its status as a replacement note, adding rarity and historical significance.
