Description

Nature’s most remarkable transformations begin quietly. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint in 2014, Animal Architects: Caterpillar and Chrysalis captures the early stage of one of the most dramatic life cycles in the natural world—the metamorphosis of the Monarch butterfly.

This beautifully crafted $3 coin highlights the Monarch caterpillar just before it enters its chrysalis, the protective structure where transformation takes place. While the butterfly’s orange-and-black wings are iconic, this coin focuses on the lesser-seen but equally vital stage that precedes it. Struck in 99.99% pure silver and enhanced with selective colour, the design brings scientific storytelling and artistic craftsmanship together in a compact, collectible format.

With a limited mintage of 10,000 coins worldwide, this quarter-ounce silver issue is both educational and visually captivating. As a pure silver coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, it is GST/HST exempt.

Design

The reverse design by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant presents a detailed side profile of a Monarch caterpillar crawling along a bright green milkweed leaf—the only plant on which Monarch caterpillars feed. Selective colour brings the caterpillar’s yellow, black, and white striping to life, while a large engraved chrysalis appears in the background, symbolizing the next stage of metamorphosis.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, along with the denomination and year of issue.
