Description

Honour the courage, sacrifice, and legacy of Canada’s First World War soldiers with the 2014 $5 Canadian Expeditionary Force Pure Silver Coin. Struck in 99.99% pure silver and weighing over two-thirds of an ounce, this commemorative issue pays tribute to the men and women who served in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF)—a formation widely regarded as one of the most effective Allied forces on the Western Front.

Composed largely of volunteers, the CEF included British-born Canadians, French Canadians, Black Canadians, and Indigenous men who made significant contributions. Feared and respected by both allies and enemies, the CEF earned the nickname “the storm troopers” from German forces. With a limited mintage of 10,000 coins, this historic and emotionally powerful piece is a meaningful collectible for those who honour Canada’s military heritage and national identity.

Design Highlights:

  • Reverse: Features a poignant illustration of a lone, kneeling foot soldier—symbolic of the last major conflict defined by traditional infantry. Behind him, silhouettes of weary troops march forward, while a convoy of ships on the horizon represents the vessels that first carried Canadians overseas in 1914. A Maple Leaf Crest Cap Badge appears at the bottom, honouring the identity and legacy of the CEF.

  • Obverse: Displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

  • Theme: Commemorates the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the First World War and pays tribute to the bravery of the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

  • Finish: Proof, showcasing varied finishes that highlight the depth and detail of the artwork.

  • Historical Significance:

    • Over 630,000 Canadians served during WWI;

    • Canada raised 260 battalions and numerous regiments, many of which still serve today;

    • The CEF earned global respect for its strength at Ypres, the Somme, Vimy Ridge, and Passchendaele.
