The word “piedfort” comes from French meaning “strong foot” or heavy measure. Historically, these thicker coins were struck in small quantities as presentation pieces for nobility and dignitaries. Design
The reverse presents a meticulously engraved depiction of the Coat of Arms of Canada, rich with heraldic symbolism. At its base, a scroll bears the national motto “A MARI USQUE AD MARE” (From sea to sea) beneath a garland of floral emblems representing England, Scotland, Ireland, and France.
The shield’s upper quadrants display historic royal symbols—England’s lions, Scotland’s lion, Ireland’s harp, and France’s fleurs-de-lis—while the lower portion shows three maple leaves symbolizing Canadians of all origins. Flanking the shield are a lion with the Union Jack and a unicorn with the royal flag of France.
