What Is a Piedfort Coin?

The word “piedfort” comes from French meaning “strong foot” or heavy measure. Historically, these thicker coins were struck in small quantities as presentation pieces for nobility and dignitaries. Today, piedfort coins remain prized by collectors for their distinctive thickness, enhanced relief, and rarity.

Design

The reverse presents a meticulously engraved depiction of the Coat of Arms of Canada, rich with heraldic symbolism. At its base, a scroll bears the national motto “A MARI USQUE AD MARE” (From sea to sea) beneath a garland of floral emblems representing England, Scotland, Ireland, and France.

The shield’s upper quadrants display historic royal symbols—England’s lions, Scotland’s lion, Ireland’s harp, and France’s fleurs-de-lis—while the lower portion shows three maple leaves symbolizing Canadians of all origins. Flanking the shield are a lion with the Union Jack and a unicorn with the royal flag of France. Above, a helmet, mantle of maple leaves, crowned lion crest, and imperial crown represent Canada’s constitutional monarchy.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.

Packaging

The coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint maroon clamshell case with a black beauty box, ideal for display or gifting.
