Description
In August 1914, Canada was drawn into the First World War when Britain declared war on Germany. What followed was a defining moment in Canada’s history—a true coming of age for a young nation. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this 2014 Proof Fine Silver Dollar commemorates the 100th anniversary of the Declaration of the First World War, honouring the courage, sacrifice, and emotional toll experienced by Canadians at home and abroad.
Across the country, train stations became scenes of tearful goodbyes as volunteers departed for basic training and eventual service overseas. This coin captures one such moment: a final embrace frozen in time, representing thousands of families who faced uncertainty, fear, and hope as loved ones answered the call of duty.
Struck in 99.99% pure silver and finished to the highest proof standard, this commemorative dollar is both a historical tribute and a deeply human reminder of the cost of war. As a Royal Canadian Mint silver issue, it is GST/HST exempt.

Design
The reverse, designed by Nova Scotia artist Bonnie Ross, depicts a poignant farewell at a Canadian train station. A couple shares a final embrace as soldiers board a train bound for Valcartier, Quebec, where recruits gathered before deployment to Europe. The stillness of the moment contrasts with the movement of the departing train, capturing the emotional weight of separation and uncertainty.
Five different finishes are used to add depth and realism, distinguishing textures across uniforms, faces, clothing, luggage, train windows, and architectural details. The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
