Description

The 2014 $5 Flowers in Canada: Tulip coin celebrates one of Canada’s most beloved springtime blooms through an innovative blend of fine silver artistry and advanced minting technology. Issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this striking collectible pays tribute to the tulip—a flower so deeply associated with Canada that Ottawa is proudly known as the Tulip Capital of North America.

Struck in 99.99% pure silver and featuring a niobium core, this coin is both visually distinctive and technically remarkable. Each niobium insert has been individually oxidized, creating a unique, permanent patina that ensures no two coins are exactly alike. Against this vibrant background, a single tulip is selectively coloured in gold, standing out as a symbol of renewal, beauty, and international friendship.

The tulip holds special historical significance in Canada. During the Second World War, Canada provided refuge to the Dutch royal family, and in gratitude, the Netherlands began gifting tulip bulbs annually after the war—a tradition that continues today and fills Canadian gardens with millions of blossoms each spring.

With a limited mintage of just 6,000 coins worldwide, this first issue in the Flowers in Canada niobium series is a standout collectible. As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, it is GST/HST exempt.

Design

The reverse design by Canadian artist Bert Liverance features a single tulip in selective colour, rising prominently from a softly engraved field of surrounding blooms. The tulip’s golden hue contrasts beautifully against the oxidized niobium core, creating depth, warmth, and visual drama.

The niobium background is not painted or plated—its colour is produced naturally through controlled oxidation, ensuring permanence and individuality in every coin.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, along with the denomination and year of issue.

Packaging

The coin is encapsulated and presented in a Royal Canadian Mint maroon clamshell, housed within a black beauty box. A serialized certificate of authenticity from the Royal Canadian Mint is included.
