Description

A haunting symbol of wilderness, resilience, and family, The Wolf is the third release in the Royal Canadian Mint’s O Canada series celebrating iconic images that define the nation. Issued in 2013, this one-ounce fine silver coin pays tribute to one of Canada’s most powerful and misunderstood animals.

Despite the chilling echo of a wolf’s howl across forests and tundra, wolves have coexisted with humans in Canada for centuries without a single documented case of a wolf killing a human being. Canada is home to the world’s second-largest wolf population, with an estimated 50,000 to 60,000 animals roaming freely across northern and western regions, as well as around the Great Lakes.

Struck in 99.99% pure silver with a limited mintage of just 8,500 coins worldwide, this proof-quality issue captures the wolf not as a menace, but as a guardian—intelligent, social, and deeply connected to its pack. As a Royal Canadian Mint silver issue, it is GST/HST exempt.

Design

Designed by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc, the reverse features a deeply moving portrait of a wolf mother standing protectively over her two pups in a Canadian forest. One pup looks outward toward the viewer, while the other gazes up at its mother for reassurance. The mother wolf’s body is arched in a defensive, watchful stance, her eyes alert and intense.

The family stands on a rocky outcrop surrounded by moss and balsam fir trees, reinforcing the connection between wildlife and Canada’s rugged landscapes. The design is framed by engraved inscriptions reading “CANADA,” the year “2013,” the face value “25 DOLLARS,” and a stylized wolf paw print.

The obverse features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt.
